Which wine goes best with raclette?

With its melt-in-the-mouth potatoes, varied charcuterie and runny cheese, raclette is a stand-out winter dish. Originally from Switzerland, raclette has long since crossed borders becoming a firm favorite among the French. So, if you’re travelling to France in winter, and particularly to the mountainous regions, you’re sure to come across this inviting and comforting dish.
But which wine should you choose to complement this ultimate in sharing platters? Here are our tips for perfect pairings.
With white wine
- Apremont or Roussette de Savoie: these white wines from the Savoie region are sure-fire favorites. Their freshness and floral aromas counterbalance the richness of the melted cheese.
- Riesling or Sylvaner: when it comes to wines from the Alsace region, choose those with fruity notes and a slight acidity to accompany your raclette.
- Mâcon-Villages or Pouilly-Fuissé: these dry white Burgundy wines are an absolute must with raclette. With their moderate acidity, they are full-bodied on the palate.
With red wine
More a fan of red wine? Don’t panic, it’s perfectly possible to serve a red with raclette, as long as you go for light, low-tannin varieties:
- Morgon or Saint-Amour: made from the Gamay grape, these Beaujolais wines offer aromas of fresh red fruit that are ideal for not overpowering the flavors of raclette. These red wines of Beaujolais also provide the perfect accompaniment to a convivial meal with friends or family.
- Pinot noir: whether from Burgundy or Alsace, this grape variety produces fine, well-balanced wines that go particularly well with charcuterie.
- Sancerre or Saumur-Champigny: for those who appreciate wines from the Loire, these red wines are a great alternative to white.
